Have you checked your CBD oil quality. How about purity?

Have you noticed all the different companies that are selling CBD oil products?  I have customers buying it from Vape shops, Bike shops, Pyramid marketing programs.  There are a lot of choices.  So which product is right for you?

After many questions about CBD oil I decided to try to find out which product is the best.  Honestly, I struggled to find a company that was willing to provide a C of A (Certificate of Analysis).  This report gives us a picture of the potency of the product.  Without this report you really don’t know what you are getting.  The other question that came up was “does the company test for contaminants?” There are reports of some CBD oils having contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and possibly bacteria.

The only company that I found that was willing to provide this information was Ananda Professionals.  I have the capability to look up the lot number from the bottle you purchase and look up the reports to show you what is in the bottle.  Ananda Professionals has their products sent off to be tested.  Below are two reports from one of the most recent lot numbers that we have in stock now.

It is easy for companies to mislead clients with their labeling

The biggest problem regarding labeling is that companies mislead their customers when it comes to the CBD dosage on their bottles. A transparent company’s CBD milligram(mg) strength is reflective of the actual active CBD in that particular product. If a bottle says 100mg of CBD, then that products should contain 100mg of active CBD. However, a lot of companies currently on the market will list the mg dosage of their CBD hemp oil without publishing the strength of their active CBD.

For example, let’s say Company A’s CBD Oil is says 100 mg on the bottle.  As you read the bottle or you ask the company for the details you find out that only 30% of the 100mg is active CBD.   That product actually only has 30MG of active CBD in it. This happens a lot in this industry and buyers need to beware when they buy CBD oil.

The power of Vitamin D

Most of you know that Vitamin D is important for bones, but that is just the start to this under-utilized nutrient.  This post will give you an insight into a few benefits that have influenced me enough to add Vitamin D to my daily regimen.

6.   Zinc Monomethionine – 20 mg – Regel Pharmalab   Josh's Vitamins Originally, I decided that I needed a little help with my immune system.  Whatever sickness the kids brought home from school, I ended up catching.  This bothered me because I noticed that Summer, my wife, never seemed to catch anything.  After much consideration, I came to the conclusion that my immune system must not be functioning as well as it should.  I then started to research ways to boost the immune system and I landed on Vitamin D.  I know many of you might be thinking that I should be discussing Vitamin C, and I agree.  That was my first thought, too.  After assessing my diet, I realized that I was getting some Vitamin C.  What I was not getting was sunshine.  Sunshine is required by your body for you to make Vitamin D.  I then had my Vitamin D checked and it showed that I was low.  A low Vitamin D level is below 30.  I discussed this with a physician friend of mine.  She told me that she checked everyone that received a routine blood level for vitamin D for one month.  She said that she was shocked that over 95% of those patients were low and that most were very low (below 20).  After doing more research,

  So, I had some work to do.  I then started to take 10,000 iu of Vitamin D3 every day.  With this amount of Vitamin D3, I was able to raise my level into the 40’s.  Still not where I was shooting, but a lot closer.  What I also found out was that getting to the 50 to 80 level was not that easy.  I heard a presentation that discussed getting a booster of Vitamin D3 in an injection once a year and then maintaining the level with daily supplementation.  I gave this a try and was able to get to the goal. Why is this goal of 50 – 80 so important for the immune system?  The answer to this question was a real eye-opener.  The immune system is in control of not only infections but also protects you from other conditions, including cancer. Some reports are showing that vitamin D may provide protection from Prostate, Kidney, Pancreatic, Lung, Gastric and Breast Cancers.  I believe that most research shows that the benefit lies in the immune support provided by vitamin D. Other benefits of getting to the range of 50 – 80 are the effects on the heart, cardiovascular system, and the brain.  Reports are showing that a proper vitamin D level can help lower blood pressure and can help patients with declining cognitive function, dementia, and alzheimer’s.  For more information on this nutrient go to www.vitmaindcouncil.org.

Helpful hints on Vitamin D: Taking 5000 units a day of vitamin D3 is our general recommendation, unless you have had a recent Vitamin D level.

Vitamin D3 is the preferred form because it is what God made not synthetic Vitamin D2 (Vitamin D2 is the form that your doctor might prescribe for you to take once a week).

How much sun do you need to make enough Vitamin D? The most natural way to get Vitamin D is exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B rays). This can happen very quickly, particularly in the summer. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin to get Vitamin D. You only need to expose your skin for around half the time it takes for your skin to turn pink and begin to burn.  The amount of Vitamin D produced from sunlight depends on the time of day, where you live in the world, and the color of your skin. The more skin you expose, the more Vitamin D is produced.

Acne, What does your Pharmacist recommend?

What does your pharmacist recommend?

Have you ever noticed an ad for a medicine that uses the phrase #1 recommended by Physicians/Pharmacists/Dentist etc.? or 4 out of 5 dentist recommend …  Have you ever wondered if the information on the ad was true?  As a pharmacist, there are many items that I recommend almost daily that have never been on any of these lists.  As a matter of fact, I don’t know if I have ever recommended any of the products that are advertised as #1 recommended by pharmacists.

One of the most common recommendations I make is for the treatment of acne.  I make recommendations for standard acne for the teenager, hormonal acne for the adult thirty something, and acne rosacea for the over 40 crowd.  No matter what category you are in, I have five recommendations for you to consider making part of your routine.

  1. Wash your face.  This seems simple enough but make sure after washing you rinse with cold water.  The cold water will help close your pores.  Warm, moist skin can leave your pores open which allows dirt and other impurities to clog your pores back up.
  2. Did you know that your skin is connected to your stomach?  Well I would not have believed it myself until a pharmacist friend of mine discussed this topic at a seminar I attended.  One of the main problems with skin conditions may be related to lactose sensitivity.  I have suggested to many patients with acne and other conditions like eczema to cut out all dairy for 2 weeks and see if that alone makes a difference.
  3.  Related to the previous point is to supplement with probiotics.  I am a big fan of probiotics.  This is an easy way to help clean up the “gut”.  Cleaning up the gastrointestinal tract will decrease inflammation and help you absorb more of the nutrients from the foods you eat.
  4. Start taking Zinc Monomethionine or Zinc Picolinate.  Either of these can block an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.  This enzyme blocks the conversion of Testosterone to DHT or Dihydrotestosterone.  Higher DHT levels can cause acne and male pattern baldness.
  5. Supplement with Vitamin B complex.  Your skin needs Vitamin B, all of them.
    B1 – Thiamin – an antioxidant that helps control free radicals.  Thiamine can eliminate toxins from the body.  Detoxifying the body can lead to smoother, acne free skin.
    B2 – Riboflavin – This is the vitamin that can change your urine color to Tennessee Vol orange.  A true Tennessee fan bleeds orange, but not too many are able to pee orange.  Riboflavin is necessary for stress reduction and we all know that stress can lead to acne.
    B3 – Nicotinamide – Taken by mouth and used on the skin in a gel (we can formulate this for you) Nicotinamide can reduce inflammation, redness, and swelling associated with acne.
    B6 – Pyridoxine – This vitamin can help with hormone balance.  Hormones that are unbalanced can play a major roll in acne outbreaks.
    B9 – Folic Acid – This vitamin helps in the regeneration of skin cells.  Regenerating skin cells is one of the ways that commercial prescription creams treat acne.These are some of my recommendations.  I would love to hear what works for you.  Please share in the comments section below.

Balance your adrenal hormone cortisol.  It is so common to hear patients say that they wake up between 2 and 4 am and cannot go back to sleep for at least an hour.  This is often due to the effect of stress on your body.  Stress increases the production of Cortisol.  Cortisol’s basic function is to turn your protein into blood sugar.  This “hit” of sugar in the middle of the night can wake your body up.

What you need to know about Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities may be triggering issues such as allergies, eczema, sinus conditions, joint pain, migraine headaches, brain fog, and fatigue.

Do you have chronic issues that seem to get better when you eat right?  Have you considered the possibility that you might have a food sensitivity?  A few years ago I took a test myself to see if I had food sensitivities.   I was shocked at what I found out.

Let me explain what I mean by food sensitivity.  Food sensitivity occurs when a person has difficulty digesting a particular food. This can lead to symptoms such as intestinal gas, abdominal pain or diarrhea.  Let me be clear, I am not discussing food allergies.  A true food allergy is when a microscopic amount of the food has the potential to lead to a serious or life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis.  Think peanut allergy.

How many of us deal with intestinal gas, abdominal pain or diarrhea?  Many patients that I talk with are using medications like Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and other stomach acid suppressing medications to deal with some of these symptoms.  Could it be that these symptoms are caused by what we are eating?  Is the medicine curing you of the sensitivity?  Maybe not, the solution may come from avoiding the food that is causing the symptom.  Actually the medications listed above could be causing more harm than just taking care of the symptoms.  To learn more about how these medications may be harmful, you can read a previous blog by clicking here.

How do I find out which foods I am sensitive to?

I am sure you already know what foods you are more sensitive to.  Think about the last time you had Mexican, Italian, and Ice cream.  Did you bloat up with gas?  Maybe even had diarrhea?  In all three food options there is a lot of dairy.  Most of us (65%) are sensitive to dairy.  So you can figure this out with an elimination diet.  Elimination diets take several weeks and can be difficult.  The quicker way is to do what I did.  Get a blood test.  The blood test analyzes almost 100 different foods that most people eat.  When the results come back it categorizes the foods that you are sensitive to in groups of most severely sensitive, moderately sensitive and mildly sensitive.  If you are interested in getting this test click here and I will get a kit ready for you.

What results should I expect if I go through with adjusting my diet for food sensitivities?

Here is what the goal is.  If you eliminate the foods that you are sensitive to for 90 days and then slowly re-introduce them you may be able to eat the foods again without sensitivity.  During the 90 day elimination your gastrointestinal tract has time to heal.  Healing the gastrointestinal tract allows for proper absorption of nutrients that boosts your immune system.  Once the immune system is back healthy you will feel better, look better, and you will be able to prevent illnesses and diseases.  By the way, the immune system is your anti-cancer system.  Why wouldn’t you want to take care of a system that can prevent cancer?

8 Vitamins/nutrients that need to be checked for ADD and ADHD

Why do we try to put everyone on the same ADD medication to treat problems that are so unique and different for each patient? 

Do you feel like you or your child is getting the same old medication that “should” help but isn’t?

Tired of Nail fungus?

View More: http://michaelallenphotography.pass.us/regal-pharmalabWouldn’t it be nice this summer to have clean clear toenails?  I wrote a little about this subject a few years ago.  Check it out click here.  In the last few years a couple new products have been produced for topical nail fungus.  You may have heard of Jublia and Kerydin.  My cost for these medications are over $1000.00 each for less than a half ounce.  The price for gold today is ~ $600.00 for a half ounce.  It is truly amazing what is going on right now with the cost of medications.

  1. Don’t wear the same shoes every day.  Rotate your shoes.  Allow the sweat to dry.
  2. Apply foot powder to inside of shoe to dry shoes more efficiently.
  3. Keep nails trim and clean daily.
  4. If you like pedicures, ask what preventive measure are taken to prevent nail fungus.

New year, New Goals – Start with Detox

It is time to Detox

The beginning of a new year always makes me refocus.  I try to plan ahead and figure out how to get better (in all aspects of life).  Today I would like to mention two things that I have found in 2017 that have made a difference in my health.  Physical exercise and detoxification programs.

Are you physically better than you were this time last year?  Do you have less pain?  Lower cholesterol?  Fewer headaches?  Fewer stomach issues?  Less tired?  If so, how did you do it?  If not, why not?

We all need motivation to get us to do something.  Eating better and exercising are two of the areas where I am not easily motivated to make a change.  I have found that I am motivated if someone else is going to join the fight with me.  I recently joined my wife, Summer, in a 10 day detox that we have available at Regel Pharmalab.  Her goal was to lower her cholesterol.  Her cholesterol has always been normal until this year.  Instead of starting to take cholesterol medications, she asked her physician to give her a chance to bring it down with diet and exercise.  He gave her 4 months to bring it down.  She researched the options and settled on the 10 day Metagenics Detox program as well as making better choices.

Detox

The detox program is designed not only to detox the gastrointestinal tract but also the liver.  We both liked the idea of doing this program because it was only 10 days.  The program includes a suggested menu for the 10 days, a detox support capsule and a detox powder that we made as a shake.  It was not the most pleasant 10 days, but it went well.  There was not a time that I felt hungry.  This detox is not designed to help you lose weight.  It is designed to clean out the gastrointestinal tract as well as the liver.  Cleansing the liver has been shown to help you eliminate excess cholesterol.

I needed a lifestyle change. Are you “Man” enough?

In my quest to help patients (and myself) find ways to prevent chronic disease, I have had plenty of crazy ideas.  As we all should know chronic disease is usually a product of poor choices related to diet and exercise.  Yes, I can help you improve your nutrient and hormone balance, but there is nothing more powerful in preventing chronic diseases than diet and exercise.  This is often referred to as a lifestyle change.

About a year ago I visited my brother-in-law in Knoxville, TN.  He asked me to get up on game day (Saturday) at 6:00am to go to a workout with him.  I thought to myself, 6:00am is 5:00am central time.  That is a bit early to be working out, and also I haven’t really been working out much lately.  I wasn’t about to let my brother-in-law in on this bit of information because that is what guys do, right?  “I thought I can hang with this guy”.  The next morning I roll out of bed and hop in his jeep and off we go.  We pull up to a dimly lit parking lot in a park.  I thought, “this is odd, where’s the gym?” A bunch of guys in black t-shirts are stretching out and hanging out chatting.  When we walk up to the group they start saying hello to someone named “Proton”.  I soon realize they are talking to my brother-in-law.  As I was being introduced to several of them they all had odd names.

One was “Crawdad”, another “P-nut” on and on it went.  I also noticed that there was not much common about each of them, some were in school, some had blue collar jobs and some white collar.  Their group didn’t seem to care what race, religion, or nationality you were.  There were only a couple things that were common among this group.  They were all men, they all had a weird name, most had a black t-shirt, and they were all crazy enough to wake up on Saturday morning at 6am to go to a workout.

About that time a 30ish year old guy named “Woodshack” starts gathering the group into a big circle around an american flag sticking out of the handle of a shovel.  He quickly gets everything started with some exercises.  I have watched a military movie or two to know we were doing each exercise in cadence.  He then instructs us to “Mosey” over to the baseball field now that the warm-up is over.  At this point we are in lines like I remember in football practice and starting to do shuttle runs, lunges, squats and an assortment of exercises.  At this point I am trying to remember if I had ever heard of a 40 year old acquiring asthma?

I am not giving up yet but through the sweat I realize that I am at the back of the pack with a guy that is 60ish.  I am not sure but I think they assigned him to make sure no man was left behind.  We are jumping on stuff, pulling up on stuff and running all over the place.  Meanwhile these jokers are chatting the whole time, making jokes and just having a grand old time.  Me, I am wheezing so loud the neighborhood dogs are barking back.  I realize that we have been going for 45 minutes straight without much of a break.  Woodshack leads the group on what seems to be the last exercise.  Run up the hill and touch a building called the Asylum.  When he said hill I thought that is not a hill, in Memphis we call that a mountain.  So, me and my new 60ish year old buddy work our way up the hill and we finally make it.  We “mosey” back to the parking lot and the rest of the group is already doing some kind of not stop abdominal torture.  This lasts for several minutes and I am now to the point of not caring anymore and giving up.  Crawdad then says recover and everyone is on their feet.

Next is the part that I thought was unique and different about these guys.  Crawdad then asked all the new guys to come to the center and they named each one of us.  I was assigned the name “Escobar”.  I believe that this is because I am a pharmacist (drug lord) from Memphis.  Crawdad then gives a little talk on something that had challenged him spiritually that week then we huddled up and prayed.

A few things were revealed to me during this hour of torture.

First, these men came together regularly and bonded while pushing each other to their limits.  They were friends and accepted any and all men.  The friendships that they formed were not the kind that changed as soon as their job changed.  They were not the friends of their wives husbands.  They joked with teach other but they pulled for each other and helped each other.  These men were learning how to lead each other which translated over to leading their families, leading their churches and leading at work.
