ProbioticsPreventive medicine is something that is often overlooked.  Physicians and Pharmacists are trained to treat people that are sick.  One of our main focus areas here at Regel PharmaLab is to provide ways either by information and or products to prevent illnesses.  Using Probiotics is, in my estimation, at the top of my list for everyone to consider when the subject of preventative medicine comes up.  Selecting the right probiotic can be a challenge.  Below are the reasons why I take Probiotics every day.

1.  Immune support

I am all about finding ways to prevent illnesses especially with 3 children bringing in all kinds of bugs into our house.  Also being the owner of a small business I don’t have the luxury of  “sick days.”  So preventing an illness is a requirement.

According to the British Journal of Nutrition (click here to see abstract), taking probiotics can prevent colds and can enhance the protective effects of the flu vaccine.

2.  Improved nutrient absorption

Did you know that bacteria inside our gastrointestinal tract can help us absorb nutrients?

According to the Journal of Nutrition (click here to see abstract), taking probiotics can enhance the absorption of minerals.  For most of us absorbing minerals like Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Chromium, etc is not that easy for our bodies to do.  

3.  Improved gastric Flow

Whether you have heart burn, reflux, constipation, chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel, crohns, or ulcerative colitis, probiotics have a place.  Honestly, this is one of my can’t miss opportunities to help patients.  I have seen impressive results when patients (infants to elderly) start using probiotics for their stomach issues.

4.  Healthy skin

5. Increased metabolism. 

If you are like me I welcome any increase in metabolism.

The microflora (this is the bacteria in the stomach and intestines) converts 30% of the inactive thyroid hormone, thyroxine, to its active form, T3, to help boost your metabolism. If you’re feeling a little sluggish, constipated, and your hair is falling out (three signs of a sub-clinical thyroid disorder), perhaps you want to add a good probiotic to your thyroid optimizing protocol.

So now lets consider which probiotic to choose.  Generally, you can see results with a probiotic that:

1.  contains at least 10 billion Colony Forming Units or CFU’s

2.  Contains at least 5 different strains of bacteria

3.  Contains at least one of the Bifidobacterium.
