Pharmacy School Brain Washed Me! A primer on CBD oil.

Ever wonder why things work? Read further to help understand how CBD oil works and how it may help you.

Most people are curious about CBD and the benefits that it can bring to their specific issue. Usually, when asked about CBD oil I can get by with stating how it is working for other patients that have tried CBD oil. More or less a patient testimonial. If I am ever asked “why does it work,” my answer can get a bit involved. As a pharmacist, I am curious about the question of “how it works”.

I have been brainwashed

I will never regret the years spent studying medications during my 4 years in pharmacy school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. But I will say that I was trained to understand “How” medications work. To many health care professionals we make an assumption that I have found to be wrong in many situations. One situation is assuming that a product like CBD oil does not have enough proof to validate a recommendation.
What I mean by this, is that pharmacists are trained to look at medical literature to determine if the medication has a proper medical study. This validation often requires an article published in medical journals such as JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association), Lancet, NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine) etc.

If a medication has been studied and an article has validated it, then usually a pharmaceutical company is selling this medication. If you ask most pharmacist, physicians and nurse practitioners they will say that all it takes for their recommendation is the FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration) approval and a pharmaceutical company producing the medication.

My “Brain Washed” statement is related to this thinking that if there is not a pharmaceutical company selling the medication, then it must not have enough evidence for me to recommend the medication. Therefore a product like CBD oil is not something that I am going to recommend.

Flip the page

Over the last 20 years practicing as a pharmacist and meeting unique needs of patients I have an appreciation for non-pharmaceutical company products. CBD oil is a plant based product (Hemp plant). It is not considered a medication by the FDA. Interestingly enough there are many plant based medications that require a prescription that have been used for a hundred years that we accept and prescribe for patients every day. To be completely transparent, most medications over the last 100 years have been developed by manipulating the specific chemicals that are found in plants that people have been using for 100’s of years to treat their medical needs.

CBD oil is made up of several cannabanoids. Through recent research we now know that the human body has places that these molecules fit called receptors. When the cannabanoid contacts a receptor in the body it causes a reaction. The reaction leads to the benefit of the cannabanoids.
Note: This is also the exact way medications work.

This lead me to question, “where are the places where Cannabanoid receptors are located in the body?” Here is a list:

  • Brain
  • Lungs
  • Heart and Blood Vessels
  • Spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Liver
  • Reproductive system
  • Colon
  • Bones
  • Muscles

Ok, so now that I know where the receptors are located, my next question is, “How does CBD oil work in these areas of the body?” Over the next several weeks I will discuss each area where CBD oil works. Today I will focus on the Brain.

The effects of CBD oil on the brain

CBD oil functions like a “dimmer switch” for brain cells. CBD oil limits the amount of dopamine that gets released. This limitation of dopamine affects how messages are sent, received and processed by each brain cell. Dopamine is involved in some parts of the brain as an excitatory neurotransmitter. When CBD limits the affects of Dopamine then the brain is not “excited”. This is the benefit that provides relief from anxiety or nervousness as well as insomnia or the inability to sleep. Below is a link to a video that provides a quick overview of CBD and the brain.

Results are in for CBD oil

I am excited to report to you the benefits that individuals have experienced when taking Ananda Professional CBD oil. Read further to find out if CBD oil is worth a try.

Ananda Professional 20 mg/ml CBD oil

About 6 months ago, I added Ananda Professional CBD oil to the line of products at Regel Pharmalab. Prior to bringing this product to our pharmacy, I was skeptical and did not have confidence in recommending CBD oil. Since that time, I have educated myself and found this product to have benefits in several areas of medicine. The areas I have the most confidence in recommending are pain, anxiety and sleep.

At first, my recommendation was mostly directed toward patients that have trouble sleeping. To test this, my wife (Summer Regel, Pharm.D.) and I started taking 10 mg at bedtime and within 7 days we both noticed we were sleeping better. Our observation is that we were able to achieve a deeper, more restful sleep.

Here are a few other comments others have made regarding sleep:
Lori S. – “Sleep is much improved and I even noticed that I have less cramping during my monthly cycle.”
Christina M. – “I am sleeping better and I noticed that my leg pain is improved as well”
Janice P. – “My sleep is so much better and I am also getting pain relief from my back pain.”
Susan N. – “I am now able to sleep 3 hours straight without waking up!”

As you can see, several patients are seeing an improvement in sleep. Did you also notice how many patients indicated they are feeling relief from pain?

If you haven’t heard, pain medications are under a lot of analysis. The phrase you may hear on the news is “The Opioid Epidemic”. Physicians are looking for alternatives to reduce pain without using or adding addictive pain medications. After studying this subject, I am coming around to the idea that CBD oil may be an answer for some patients. Here are a few things I found:

  • The Journal of Pain concluded that patients with chronic pain who take opiates may be able to reduce the amount of opiates needed if CBD is added to the treatment.
  • The Journal of Psychopharmacology showed that using cannabinoids reduced the need for medications to treat anxiety, depression, sleep, and migraines.
  • The Journal of Experimental Medicine indicates that cannabinoids suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain by targeting 3 glycine receptors.
  • The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine reported that cannabinoid therapy may play a role in reducing opioid intake. (Or, reduce the amount of pain medication required to control pain)

Most patients tell me they would love to be able to stop taking their pain medications. The problem is, many other medication options don’t work. As you can see from these medical reports, we now have something that is worth a try.

My recommendation on CBD oil for pain is a “work in progress” but I would not hesitate to recommend a one month trial for any of the following conditions.

  • Migraines
  • Low back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Pain related to gout
  • Neuropathy (numbness/tingling)
  • Menstrual cramping

Have you checked your CBD oil quality. How about purity?

Have you noticed all the different companies that are selling CBD oil products?  I have customers buying it from Vape shops, Bike shops, Pyramid marketing programs.  There are a lot of choices.  So which product is right for you?

After many questions about CBD oil I decided to try to find out which product is the best.  Honestly, I struggled to find a company that was willing to provide a C of A (Certificate of Analysis).  This report gives us a picture of the potency of the product.  Without this report you really don’t know what you are getting.  The other question that came up was “does the company test for contaminants?” There are reports of some CBD oils having contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and possibly bacteria.

The only company that I found that was willing to provide this information was Ananda Professionals.  I have the capability to look up the lot number from the bottle you purchase and look up the reports to show you what is in the bottle.  Ananda Professionals has their products sent off to be tested.  Below are two reports from one of the most recent lot numbers that we have in stock now.

It is easy for companies to mislead clients with their labeling

The biggest problem regarding labeling is that companies mislead their customers when it comes to the CBD dosage on their bottles. A transparent company’s CBD milligram(mg) strength is reflective of the actual active CBD in that particular product. If a bottle says 100mg of CBD, then that products should contain 100mg of active CBD. However, a lot of companies currently on the market will list the mg dosage of their CBD hemp oil without publishing the strength of their active CBD.

For example, let’s say Company A’s CBD Oil is says 100 mg on the bottle.  As you read the bottle or you ask the company for the details you find out that only 30% of the 100mg is active CBD.   That product actually only has 30MG of active CBD in it. This happens a lot in this industry and buyers need to beware when they buy CBD oil.

These are the things that I look for in every product that we make and order at Regel Pharmalab.  Let us be your CBD oil expert.

5 reasons to try CBD oil

It is finally here!!  A Quality CBD oil you can trust

I hope you have come to expect the highest quality from the products we offer at the most affordable price.  We may not be the first to jump on the latest product and the reason why is quality.  Every ingredient and every product at Regel Pharmalab is hand picked by our staff to ensure quality.  This is usually not a big issue…until CBD oil came up.

Recently we decided to bring in a CBD oil product.  My colleagues in other parts of the country have been telling me about the success their patients are having with CBD oil.   Patients with pain, anxiety and sleep problems were on the top of the list.  The experts that I have talked with are saying that 80% of patients are improving when taking a high quality CBD oil.

I set out to find quality that I can trust at a reasonable price.  There are reports that some CBD oil have very little active ingredients, may contain pesticides, and others contain heavy metals.  I reviewed several companies and found Ananda Professional CBD oil.  This company met every qualification that I require.  I am proud to partner with a company that values quality.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a mixture of cannabanoids.  These molecules are extracted from the hemp plant.  In our body we have a system called the endocannabanoid system.  This system is activated by a molecule that your body makes called anandamide.  The ingredients that are found in CBD oil can replace anandamide and activate the endocannabanoid system.  Activating this system can effect:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Digestion
  • Immune Function
  • Mood
  • Pain
  • Sleep

This system regulates a lot of other systems in the body.  We are still learning what benefits CBD oils can offer.

Is CBD oil worth a try?

I am recommending Ananda Professional CBD oil for patients with:

  1. Pain (Arthritis, Inflammation)
  2. Anxiety
  3. Sleep
  4. Fibromyalgia
  5. Seizures
Most medications do not have drug interactations with Ananda CBD oil.  Please send me your list of medications and I will analyze them before you start taking CBD oil.
The most common side effects are dry mouth and drowsiness and these are very rare.

The power of Vitamin D

Most of you know that Vitamin D is important for bones, but that is just the start to this under-utilized nutrient.  This post will give you an insight into a few benefits that have influenced me enough to add Vitamin D to my daily regimen.

To review, my personal regimen includes:

1.  Omega with CO-Q10 – 1000 mg/100 mg – by Nordic Naturals

2.  Super Pro Biotic – 75 Billion CFU – by Kirkman Labs

3.  Magnesium AAC – 200 mg – Regel Pharmalab

4.  Active Life Nutrients – Multi-vitamins – Regel Pharmalab

5.   Vitamin D3 – 5000 iu – Regel Pharmalab

6.   Zinc Monomethionine – 20 mg – Regel Pharmalab   Josh's Vitamins Originally, I decided that I needed a little help with my immune system.  Whatever sickness the kids brought home from school, I ended up catching.  This bothered me because I noticed that Summer, my wife, never seemed to catch anything.  After much consideration, I came to the conclusion that my immune system must not be functioning as well as it should.  I then started to research ways to boost the immune system and I landed on Vitamin D.  I know many of you might be thinking that I should be discussing Vitamin C, and I agree.  That was my first thought, too.  After assessing my diet, I realized that I was getting some Vitamin C.  What I was not getting was sunshine.  Sunshine is required by your body for you to make Vitamin D.  I then had my Vitamin D checked and it showed that I was low.  A low Vitamin D level is below 30.  I discussed this with a physician friend of mine.  She told me that she checked everyone that received a routine blood level for vitamin D for one month.  She said that she was shocked that over 95% of those patients were low and that most were very low (below 20).  After doing more research,

So, I had some work to do.  I then started to take 10,000 iu of Vitamin D3 every day.  With this amount of Vitamin D3, I was able to raise my level into the 40’s.  Still not where I was shooting, but a lot closer.  What I also found out was that getting to the 50 to 80 level was not that easy.  I heard a presentation that discussed getting a booster of Vitamin D3 in an injection once a year and then maintaining the level with daily supplementation.  I gave this a try and was able to get to the goal. Why is this goal of 50 – 80 so important for the immune system?  The answer to this question was a real eye-opener.  The immune system is in control of not only infections but also protects you from other conditions, including cancer. Some reports are showing that vitamin D may provide protection from Prostate, Kidney, Pancreatic, Lung, Gastric and Breast Cancers.  I believe that most research shows that the benefit lies in the immune support provided by vitamin D. Other benefits of getting to the range of 50 – 80 are the effects on the heart, cardiovascular system, and the brain.  Reports are showing that a proper vitamin D level can help lower blood pressure and can help patients with declining cognitive function, dementia, and alzheimer’s.  For more information on this nutrient go to www.vitmaindcouncil.org.

Helpful hints on Vitamin D: Taking 5000 units a day of vitamin D3 is our general recommendation, unless you have had a recent Vitamin D level.

Vitamin D3 is the preferred form because it is what God made not synthetic Vitamin D2 (Vitamin D2 is the form that your doctor might prescribe for you to take once a week).

How much sun do you need to make enough Vitamin D? The most natural way to get Vitamin D is exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B rays). This can happen very quickly, particularly in the summer. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin to get Vitamin D. You only need to expose your skin for around half the time it takes for your skin to turn pink and begin to burn.  The amount of Vitamin D produced from sunlight depends on the time of day, where you live in the world, and the color of your skin. The more skin you expose, the more Vitamin D is produced.

So, now what? Stop by or call me to discuss some of the options we have available for you here at Regel Pharmalab.  We can provide you with Vitamin D testing.  We have several options for you to consider when adding Vitamin D to your daily nutrients.

Acne, What does your Pharmacist recommend?

View More: http://michaelallenphotography.pass.us/regal-pharmalab

What does your pharmacist recommend?

Have you ever noticed an ad for a medicine that uses the phrase #1 recommended by Physicians/Pharmacists/Dentist etc.? or 4 out of 5 dentist recommend …  Have you ever wondered if the information on the ad was true?  As a pharmacist, there are many items that I recommend almost daily that have never been on any of these lists.  As a matter of fact, I don’t know if I have ever recommended any of the products that are advertised as #1 recommended by pharmacists.

One of the most common recommendations I make is for the treatment of acne.  I make recommendations for standard acne for the teenager, hormonal acne for the adult thirty something, and acne rosacea for the over 40 crowd.  No matter what category you are in, I have five recommendations for you to consider making part of your routine.

  1. Wash your face.  This seems simple enough but make sure after washing you rinse with cold water.  The cold water will help close your pores.  Warm, moist skin can leave your pores open which allows dirt and other impurities to clog your pores back up.
  2. Did you know that your skin is connected to your stomach?  Well I would not have believed it myself until a pharmacist friend of mine discussed this topic at a seminar I attended.  One of the main problems with skin conditions may be related to lactose sensitivity.  I have suggested to many patients with acne and other conditions like eczema to cut out all dairy for 2 weeks and see if that alone makes a difference.
  3.  Related to the previous point is to supplement with probiotics.  I am a big fan of probiotics.  This is an easy way to help clean up the “gut”.  Cleaning up the gastrointestinal tract will decrease inflammation and help you absorb more of the nutrients from the foods you eat.
  4. Start taking Zinc Monomethionine or Zinc Picolinate.  Either of these can block an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.  This enzyme blocks the conversion of Testosterone to DHT or Dihydrotestosterone.  Higher DHT levels can cause acne and male pattern baldness.
  5. Supplement with Vitamin B complex.  Your skin needs Vitamin B, all of them.
B1 – Thiamin – an antioxidant that helps control free radicals.  Thiamine can eliminate toxins from the body.  Detoxifying the body can lead to smoother, acne free skin.
B2 – Riboflavin – This is the vitamin that can change your urine color to Tennessee Vol orange.  A true Tennessee fan bleeds orange, but not too many are able to pee orange.  Riboflavin is necessary for stress reduction and we all know that stress can lead to acne.
B3 – Nicotinamide – Taken by mouth and used on the skin in a gel (we can formulate this for you) Nicotinamide can reduce inflammation, redness, and swelling associated with acne.
B6 – Pyridoxine – This vitamin can help with hormone balance.  Hormones that are unbalanced can play a major roll in acne outbreaks.
B9 – Folic Acid – This vitamin helps in the regeneration of skin cells.  Regenerating skin cells is one of the ways that commercial prescription creams treat acne. These are some of my recommendations.  I would love to hear what works for you.  Please share in the comments section below.

3 steps to help you “Sleep Like a Baby”

Step 1 – Sleep starts by taking Magnesium Glycinate 300 mg every night at bedtime.

Most likely you will need anywhere from 100mg to 600mg.  This nutrient is critical for muscle relaxation and calming the brain.

Other benefits of Magnesium

  • digestion
  • nervous system
  • blood pressure
  • insulin sensitivity
  • bones, teeth
  • genes
  • your heart and other muscles (without enough of this mineral, they spasm and cramp). In fact, magnesium is super-important for your heart.

And, of course, it helps you relax into sleep.

I often am asked “Why do we need to take Magnesium?”
(The Following is credited to Dr. Carol Dean)
At least 80 percent of us suffer from magnesium malnutrition because we:

    • eat processed foods
    • eat foods that are grown in nutrient-poor soil
    • consume too much tea, coffee, cola, sugar, and alcohol
    • don’t eat enough vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit, and other whole foods

  • drink fluoridated water; use products and take drugs that contain fluoride
  • take calcium supplements without magnesium to balance them (should be a 1:1 ratio)
  • have too much stress or suffer from PTSD (extreme stress caused by traumatic experiences)
  • may be diabetic or taking diuretics

I take 300 mg of Magnesium Glycinate every night at bedtime.  To order Magnesium Glycinate now click here.

Step 2 – Start taking Melatonin 3 mg Slow Release.

The usual starting dose is 3 mg.  We have a 3 mg slow release that can help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

Melatonin is already in our body for the following purposes:

Melatonin’s main job in the body is to regulate sleep-wake cycles.  When the sun goes down Melatonin increases and allows you body to prepare for sleep.  Melatonin is a hormone.  Hormones are messenger chemicals that tell the cells of the body what to do.  So if you want your body to work like it is designed to work, then why not replace Melatonin if it is low.  Your next question is probably “how can I know if I am low in Melatonin?”  I’m glad you asked.

  • As we age we do not make as much Melatonin.
  • If you have mood changes you may be low in Melatonin
  • If you have sleep problems
  • Menopausal symptoms (ladies only)
  • Low thyroid symptoms (click here for more info on low thyroid symptoms)

Or you can just give me a call and we can test your Melatonin level.  If you would like to order a bottle of our Melatonin 3mg Slow Release click here.

I recently started taking Melatonin and WOW.   I have not felt more rested in a long time.

Step 3 – Call me to help you balance Cortisol

Balance your adrenal hormone cortisol.  It is so common to hear patients say that they wake up between 2 and 4 am and cannot go back to sleep for at least an hour.  This is often due to the effect of stress on your body.  Stress increases the production of Cortisol.  Cortisol’s basic function is to turn your protein into blood sugar.  This “hit” of sugar in the middle of the night can wake your body up.

We have been working with individuals to turn this middle-of-the-night cortisol issue off.  If you think you might have a Cortisol problem click here.

In summary:

  1.  Add Magnesium Glycinate 300 mg
  2.  Add Melatonin 3 mg Slow release
  3.  Contact me to resolve your cortisol issue.
