Sore hands and feet from Chemotherapy

Hand-Foot Syndrome

I recently became aware of a condition caused by chemotherapy medications.  This condition is called Hand-Foot Syndrome (not hand, foot and mouth).  I cannot imagine having to deal with a constant irritation to the palms of the hands and bottoms of the feet.  The longer the patient is on chemotherapy and the higher the dose of the chemotherapy the more severe the symptoms.  Sometimes the oncologist has to stop therapy because the symptoms get so intolerable.

The most common chemotherapy medications that can cause this syndrome are fluorouracil and doxorubicin.  There are many others on the list of chemotherapy that have the potential to cause this syndrome.  Let me know if you would like me to review the medication that you or your loved one is taking.

Mild symptoms include:  redness, swelling, tingling or burning, tenderness, tight skin, thick calluses and blisters on the palms and soles.

Severe symptoms include: cracked, flaking and peeling skin, blisters, ulcers, severe pain, and difficulty walking and using hands.

If you know someone that has this condition give me a call, we have answers that can help.  In the mean time here are a few things to do to manage the pain and discomfort.

Managing Hand-Foot Syndrome

  1. Limit exposure to hot water when bathing and washing dishes.
  2. Carefully pat skin dry after bathing.
  3.  Cool hands and feet with ice packs or cool running water.
  4. Avoid exposure to sources of heat.
  5. Avoid contact with laundry detergents or household cleaners.
  6. Avoid use of rubber or vinyl gloves.  If you must use them, wear white cotton gloves underneath them.
  7. Avoid using tools or household items that require pressing your hand against a hard surface like a garden tool or knife.
  8. Avoid applying friction to hands.
  9. Avoid walking barefoot.

Every day I have the privilege of working with patients and I enjoy learning about new issues that patients are struggling with.  If you have an issue that you are struggling with, I would appreciate the opportunity to find an answer for you.   Give me a call (901) 757-9434 or email

Merry Christmas From Regel Pharmalab

The staff at Regel Pharmalab wishes you a Merry Christmas.  My favorite account of Jesus’ birth is from Luke 2:1-20.  I encourage you to take a minute and read it this Christmas.

Go to war on Hemorrhoids!

It is time to wage war on your hemorrhoids!

Hemorrhoids can be a thing of the past.  In a recent post I discussed was to care for hemorrhoids.  Click here to take you to the post.  Now it is time to got to war.  I am here to equip you for the battle.  One of my favorite products that I have seen over these last 20 or so years is the Rectal Rocket.   No, you don’t light this rocket and there is no explosion.  This rocket is inserted at bedtime and slowly melts.  While the rocket is melting the medications are released.  The medications reduce the size of the hemorrhoid and the pain.

Several clients have asked how we formulate the Regel Rectal Rocket so I decided to let you in on our “secret process”.  I hope you enjoy.

Now you know the secret formula.  We have had several comments on these over the years.  But most every patient that has used these has been successful at reducing the pain and size of the hemorrhoid.  One local OBGYN used these for her own hemorrhoid and now is symptom free.  Is it time for you to arm yourself with the Regel Rectal Rocket.

This is a prescription medication so we will need to contact your physician for authorization.  If you would like me to send your physician a recommendation for Regel Rectal Rockets give me a call (901) 757-9434 or e-mail

Hormone balance and infertility

Is it time to find answers to your infertility?Regel Silver Polished

I am close to several couples that have struggled with infertility.  Some never had a positive pregnancy test and others have had miscarriages.  This part of life is one that can change you and your relationship with your spouse.  We often have the opportunity to work with women that are low in progesterone and need a hormone balance.  I physician recently discussed his experience with infertility and how balancing his wife’s hormones made it possible to get pregnant.  Here is his story.

Physician Story

Pharmacist Story

One of my neat stories that I recently heard comes from a recent customer.  I was explaining to a women how to properly use her medication for her child’s wart.  She said that without a compound that we provided a few years ago she would not have a child with warts.  She explained that she had had multiple miscarriages and finally found out that she had low progesterone levels in the first trimester.  We formulated a progesterone suppository for her and she was able to maintain her pregnancy.

If you know someone that has poly-cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or any other infertility issue we are a resource that understands your struggle.  Share this post with those that need this.

I need help with supplements!

Trying to find someone that knows what supplements you need?

“What supplements should I take now that I am taking ____ medication?”
“Can you help me choose the right supplement for my skin?”
“I started taking supplements and I am now up to 5 to 10 supplements.  Am I taking too much and is it okay to take all of these?”

These are some common questions that I hear at Regel Pharmalab.  Let me tell you how we handle this the “Regel” way.

Did you know?

We offer a free consultation service to help answer these questions.  Here is what you do.  Call our pharmacy (901) 757-9434 and set up an appointment.  At this appointment you will have the opportunity to ask your questions about supplements with myself or Anita Hester, RN.

My essentials

My essentials

Most of the time these appointments are 30 minutes and do not cost you anything.  At your appointment we would like to see a list of the medications, vitamins, minerals and other supplements that you currently take.   We will also ask you what problems you are having and what medical conditions you have.   From this information we formulate a supplement plan.  Our goal is to provide you with the necessary vitamins, mineral and nutrients your body needs to function at its best.

Optimal Nutrition

Our Nutrition plan is designed to optimize your metabolism and replace the nutrients that are lacking in your diet.  Did you know that some medications can deplete your body of necessary nutrients.  For example, cholesterol medications (statins) deplete the body of Co-Enzyme Q-10.  This nutrient is essential in providing each cell of the body with energy.  Without adequate amounts of this nutrient your metabolism slows and you feel tired and may have muscle aches and weakness.

It’s time to let us help you find your vitamin and nutrient balance.

Folic Acid vs. L-Methylfolate (MTHF)

Folic Acid may not be your best choice

We often overlook some of the most fundamental nutrients that can provide the most protection for disease.  I feel that folic acid is one of these often overlooked but powerful nutrients.  So what is this new version of Folic Acid – L-Methylfolate?  Allow me to explain why I make sure that my multivitamin has L-Methylfolate instead of Folic acid.

Did you know that Folic Acid has been reported to reduce risks related to heart disease, stroke and some kinds of cancer.  This B vitamin is found in our food, and in most multi-vitamins.  An article in the February 15, 2013, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association ( JAMA) has spiked a great deal of interest in folic acid supplementation. In the published study, women who took folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy were 40% less likely to have a baby later diagnosed with autism. Given the many drugs that deplete folic acid, such as oral contraceptives and hormone therapy, and the critical role that folic acid plays in the body, folic acid should be a recommended supplement for women aged 18 to 78. However, to provide the most active form of folic acid, L-methylfolate should be recommended. Unlike synthetic folic acid, which needs to be metabolized to L-methylfolate before it can be used, L-methylfolate can be used directly by the body.

Do you have the genetic Mutation?

There is a significant subset of individuals who cannot convert folic acid to L-methylfolate and will not see any benefit from synthetic folic acid.  This group of individuals are at an increased risk of cardiovascular events from blood clotting.  To find out more about the genetic mutation that leads to these issues, one of my pharmacy students explains it in a previous post (Click Here to read it).

If you are interested in switching your multivitamin to one that contains L-methylfolate stop by or order it on-line (click here).  If you already know that you have a genetic mutation of the MTHFR then you need to take a higher dose like our 2000mcg MTHF  (click here).

Best Options for you

A one capsule a day Multivitamin

A one capsule a day Multivitamin that provides 400mcg of MTHF

Provides 2000mcg of MTHF

Provides 2000mcg of Methylfolate

Testing for a genetic mutation is something that your physician can order for you.  Next time you are at your physician’s office have them check for this mutation.

Lice prevention and treatment

Yep, it is that time of year.  The kids are back in school and they bring every “bug”  home with them.  One of the bugs they may bring home to share with the family is lice.  If your house is like mine this is moms worst nightmare.  What if you could prevent your child from getting lice?  lice

Prevention, it is what we do.

At Regel Pharmalab we are dedicated to finding ways to prevent illness.  So we always look at prevention before treatment.  One of the things we have seen help to prevent lice is a product we formulate called YAC lice repellent spray.  This spray is a combination of essential oils, Ylang-Ylang, Anise, and Coconut oil, that is mixed with ethyl alcohol.  This formulation is sprayed on the back of the neck/hair line area once a day every morning before school.

You can make your own

The formulation we use calls for:

Ylang-Ylang oil     1%
Anise oil                 1%
Coconut oil            1%
Mixed in Ethyl Alcohol 200 Proof

You can substitute the Ethyl alcohol with 190 proof.

But what if I already have it?

Treatment is difficult now that some of the lice are now resistant (will not be killed) to the over the counter lice treatment options.  There are prescription options that your physician can prescribe to get rid of lice.  Here are a few options that your physician can provide.

First your physician can prescribe one of the following:

Ulesfia (Benzyl Alcohol) Lotion – Price without insurance coverage ~ $380 up to $760 depending on how long the hair is.
Sklice (Ivermectin) Lotion – Price without insurance coverage ~ $315
Malathion Lotion – Price without insurance coverage ~ $280
Natroba (Spinosad) Lotion  –  Price without insurance coverage ~ $215 up to $275

If these treatments do not eradicate the lice then your physician can prescribe:

Lindane Shampoo – Price without insurance coverage ~ $120

It seem like prevention is a great option in the case of lice.  As you can see lice treatment can be very expensive and may take a couple weeks of being uncomfortable.

Now I want to hear from you.  How do you prevent or treat lice? (comment below)

Better behavior starts with better sleep

Do you think more sleep would make a difference?   Do you remember when you could get by on a few hours of sleep and not feel it much?  If you are like me that was a long time ago.

For many, sleep is difficult to come by.  Uninterrupted sleep is nearly impossible.  With our hectic schedules, poor dietary habits, and no time for exercise, sleep is one of the most common issues that we hear from our patients.

Welcome to the Regel home.  We have three children at our house.  Our youngest is 5 and we are finally getting consistent sleep more often than not.  I am often times blind to my issues when I don’t get enough sleep, but there is no way you can be blind to the lack of sleep in our children.  We have “Meany”, “Whiney” and “Whiney Jr.” in our house.  One of our children “Meany”, is able to develop a killer attitude towards the rest of the family.  “Whiney” and “Whiney Jr.” have a knack for finding a way to complain and gripe at every little thing.  Summer, my wife, can’t stand the whines and I about loose it when I see someone deliberately being mean.  Oh yea, before I forget, if our children are sleep deprived that usually means mom and dad are sleep deprived.  This situation of Meany, Whiney, and Whiney Jr. and “Mr. and Mrs. Have-No-Patience” lead to a not so lovely evening.

I have observed the following in our children and it may translate to you as it does to Summer and I.

  1. Enough sleep equals better behavior and improved work at school (more focus)
  2. Enough sleep equals better dietary habits (choose protein foods over carbohydrate foods)
  3. Enough sleep equals more exercise (higher activity or less computer/TV time)

As I observe these three areas of my children’s lives, I can see a need for more sleep in my life.  I definitely could use more focus, motivation to exercise, and reduced carbohydrate cravings.

So how much sleep is enough?  Many people I talk with say if they get 5 hours they are fine and they don’t see any benefit in getting more.  Studies have shown that 7 to 8 hours is a minimum.  By the way, that 7 to 8 hours is uninterrupted sleep.

Here is a starting point for those that want better sleep.

Better sleep with proper nutrients.

Better sleep with proper nutrients.

My first choice for patients that are having trouble sleeping is Magnesium Chelate.  This is easy to recommend because most of us are deficient.  How easy would it be to just replace what you are deficient and reap the benefits.  Here is a little info on our Magnesium Chelate.

This Magnesium is attached to an amino acid.  Attaching the Magnesium to an amino acid helps the body absorb the magnesium through the gastrointestinal tract.  Once inside the body the magnesium has the capability to perform several functions that can improve sleep.

  1. Muscle Relaxation – we all hold stress in the shoulders and neck area and relaxation of these muscles helps your whole body relax.  This is also the reason that this form of Magnesium can help with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).  We have several testimonials on how this simple mineral has helped our patients.
  2. Irregular heart beat – The “heart flutters” that many patients feel when they lay down can affect sleep and increase stress.  Magnesium can help regulate the heart flutters.
  3. Mood Stabilization – studies show that anxiety can be minimized with proper Magnesium balance.

The next item on my recommendation for improving sleep is Melatonin 3mg Long Acting.  Some patients may not be able to produce enough and can be deficient in Melatonin.  Melatonin generally drops as we age.  Since this hormone regulates the day and night cycle it is important to maintain an adequate level in the body.  Replacing this hormone is safe and with the proper amount can help patients with insomnia.

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is believed to be the component in green tea responsible for its relaxation effects.  We all hold tension and stress a little too much and adding the calming effect of L-Theanine can help us relax to the point of sleep.  L-Theanine can also improve the quality of sleep itself.  Many people report that L-Theanine makes falling asleep easier and faster.  It also extends the duration of deep sleep.  This is essential for those who typically wake up several times during the night.  L-Theanine can restore the wake cycle which makes the waking process easier.  No more grogginess!  Wouldn’t it be nice to feel rested every morning.  You can then begin the new day focused and calm, with the previous day’s stress having been reset to zero.

We are here to listen and recommend the appropriate sleep aid for you.  So stop taking those prescription sleeping pills and sleep better with what your body needs. We carry each one of these non-prescription items in our pharmacy and we can send these to your home.

No time for breakfast? Try a shake.

Are you a fan of smoothies, shakes or juicing?

With so little time in the mornings I struggle to get breakfast.  The one thing that has helped me is to make a quick smoothie.  With the help of a blender it only takes me 3 minutes to prepare a smoothie.  Having 21 grams of protein is critical for me to get through the morning.

perfect protein label

The concept of liquid nutrition, be it meal replacement, liquid protein, or sports nutrition offers a number of advantages. Liquid nutrition supplies nutrients in a form that is more easily and efficiently taken up than nutrients obtained from solid foods, which require specific digestive enzymes and stomach acid for absorption. Liquid nutrition allows for specific formulation and nutrient targeting to address specific disease states or individual needs. Liquid supplements can also provide a measured intake of calories, sugar and sodium.

Liquid protein nutrition, such as Perfect Protein Powder, has been recognized as having immense value in providing a sound nutritional foundation for individuals. Liquid protein nutrition can be enhanced by the addition of whole food ingredients such as fruits, berries, and vegetables, and may be flavored to suit the user’s preferences. Liquid protein smoothies can even be “supercharged” by the addition of specific vitamins and minerals. The list of individuals who can benefit from liquid protein nutrition includes, athletes and body builders, individuals with wound healing challenges, hospice patients, cancer patients, bariatric surgery patients, and anyone wishing to reverse metabolic syndrome.

So now you can drink your way to better health.
