Have you been forgetting things, feeling exhausted, screaming at your family, or wanting to stick your head in the freezer because you feel like you are on fire? Well you are not alone. These complaints and many others are very common and most likely caused by hormonal imbalance. We specialize in helping patients with these problems and our on staff RN/ Bio-identical Hormone Specialist, Anita Hester, is going to elaborate on how we can help you.
Our bodies depend on chemical messengers called hormones to perform certain tasks in keeping us alive and healthy. The sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol) are made from pregnenolone which comes from cholesterol. Male and female sex hormones are found in everyone but obviously the amounts differ depending on your sex. Women have more estrogen and progesterone while men have more testosterone and DHEA. These hormones work with the thyroid hormones also to keep your body in balance.
If the delicate balance of these hormones is interrupted for any reason, your body makes you aware of it with a variety of symptoms. Many people live with symptoms for years without realizing that what they are feeling signals hormone imbalance. They may mention how they feel to their doctor and be given a prescription for an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety drug. These medications may temporarily cover some symptoms but do nothing to correct the hormone problem, and actually can cause a lot of side effects.
Some of the more common symptoms of hormone imbalance we hear about are hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, dryness, skin changes, anxiety, depression, mental fogginess, memory lapses, body aches, muscle weakness, fatigue, sugar cravings, weight gain, joint pains, and low sex drive. There are many more and patients are often very surprised to find that what they just passed off as “getting older” is actually a lack of certain hormones.
As a hormone and nutritional supplement user myself I can tell you that it can be life-changing. You can get back to feeling like yourself again by having your hormone levels checked and getting a customized recommendation for natural or Bio-identical hormone therapy. We offer saliva testing which is an excellent way to determine exactly how much of the hormones in your body are available for use in your cells. During your hormone consult we will discuss your test results, medical history and symptoms. An individualized prescription for your specific needs will be developed and you will also receive a recommendation for nutritional supplements that are important for hormone balance and symptom relief.
Call or come by the pharmacy for more information about saliva testing and our Cool Ladies Club. What are some symptoms you are experiencing? Comment below
Do you want to have toe nails that you are proud of for summertime?
Well here at Regel PharmaLab, we have a few options for you! I am going to let Regel Compounding Specialist and Pharm. D., Natalie Danielson, tell you about them and also about a patient who has an encouraging story to share.
When you have a nail fungus, you can experience yellowing of the nail, pain, changing in the shape of the nail, and thickening of the nail. Your nail may become brittle and break. Nail fungus is treatable, but it can take several weeks to months for the fungal nail to be replaced with a clear, healthy nail. If you want to have pretty toe nails that you are proud of for summertime, it is best to start treatment as soon as possible.
There are both topical and oral prescription medications available to treat nail fungus. Oral anti-fungal medications can cause side effects and drug interactions. Side effects include liver damage, headaches and stomach issues. Since you may take other medications, worrying about drug interactions is a major concern. Topical medications eliminate those side effects and drug interactions.
The topical nail formulas that we compound are dispensed in bottles that look similar to nail polish bottles. The medication is brushed on the nails, like a nail polish, twice daily. It is very important to faithfully use this medication twice daily every day to get the best results. As you continue using this medication, a clear, healthy nail will begin to grow at the base and you will trim the infected nail frequently. Be sure to sanitize your nail tools so that you do not infect your healthy nails.
How about I let you hear from one of our patients? Mr. K has been using one of our formulas for a few months. His big toe nails were “crusty” and “yellow.” After 1 and 1/2 months his toe nails started to peel when trimming his nails. Now his nails are clear of the crusty yellow look and are growing back clear and healthy. See another success story on the Regel toenail fungus formula: http://regelpharmalab.com/blog/toe-nails-can-proud-summer-time/
Once you have gotten rid of the nail fungus, you will probably want to know how to prevent future nail infections. Since fungi like to hang out in a warm, moist environment, it is best to keep your nails as cool and dry as possible. Taking proper care of your nails can help prevent nail fungus from growing or returning. Here are a few tips to help keep the nail fungus away:
Keep your feet clean and dry. You can do this by making sure that you are wearing dry socks and shoes.
Use foot powders/sprays to help keep the feet as dry as possible. (If you have a problem with your feet sweating, we have a compounded medication that can help this issue as well.)
Avoid sharing nail tools, such as nail clippers and scissors. Before going to a nail salon, you may want to ask them how they clean their supplies to prevent nail fungus.
Wear flip-flops or other footwear in a gym shower or locker room.
If you are ready to get rid of your toe nail fungus and have pretty feet for the summer, we definitely have something that can help you! To get a prescription, you can either give your doctor a call or give us a call and we can make a recommendation for you. We would like to hear from you if you have a question on nail fungus or nail fungus formulas. Comment below.
Jennifer (Jeny) Rendon is a Family Nurse Practitioner who owns her own primary care clinic in Bartlett called Absolute Family Health. The role of a Nurse Practitioner began in the 1960’s and has been constantly evolving due to the increasing shortage of physicians going into primary care. Some speculate that it is due to the decrease in reimbursement by health insurance companies for primary care services. However, Nurse Practitioners are typically reimbursed less than physicians by health insurance companies but are projected to fill in the shortage of primary care providers in our country. In our country, each individual state makes their own laws regarding the level of scope of practice of Nurse Practitioners. In our state of TN, Nurse Practitioners are legally allowed to own their medical facility under the supervision of a collaborating physician. But TN may join the numerous states that do not require this as early as 2015. A family nurse practitioner is trained to do just about the same as primary care physicians except we are not allowed to sign home health orders or death certificates which can create barriers in the care of their patients.
Jeny was born in Southern California but has called the South home for over half of her life. She received her Associate of Arts from Carteret Community College in Morehead City, NC; her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC; and her Master’s of Science in Nursing from University of TN Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. Her experience in nursing ranges from Labor & Delivery, Oncology, Cardiology, Psychology, and her love of Primary Care. Jeny always knew she would not stay in the hospital setting because she believes that patients do not get the care they truly deserve due to the politics of health care. This was also the reason why she decided to open her own primary care clinic in July, 2010. She enjoys getting to know her patient’s and doing everything possible to make sure they get the healthcare she feels every person deserves.
Jeny offers a variety of services at her clinic because she desires to take care of the person as a whole. Her patients consist of ages from newborn on up. She believes strongly in preventive care because the majority of chronic diseases are due to unhealthy factors such as being overweight. Many believe that if their type II diabetes is controlled then they are cured, which is a myth. It just means that there is a band-aid on your diabetes and hopefully the band-aid will prevent further consequences such as going blind, having your feet amputated, or being on dialysis. But there are ways you can cure your type II diabetes and that is thru lifestyle changes which include losing weight. Jeny offers three weight loss programs at her clinic and one of them is the HCG Weight Loss Cure.
The HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) Weight Loss Cure resets your hypothalamus so you can lose up to 34 lbs. in 40 days! Dr. Simeons developed the HCG weight loss cure protocol in Italy in the 1950’s. HCG is a natural hormone that is only produced in the human body of a pregnant female but its action is the same in men, women, and children and brings about a considerable increase in the functional capacity of the hypothalamus. HCG causes the body to release up to 4000 calories into your blood stream from abnormal fat which is located in your shoulders, upper arms, belly, hips, thighs, and buttocks. HCG also affects your metabolism and provides your body a detox by allowing your body to rest from all of the not-so-healthy foods and drinks. It is believed that this detox period allows your hypothalamus to clear itself of the chemical build-up that can prevent weight loss and re-establishes the natural functioning and hormone release of the hypothalamus.
The HCG Weight Loss Cure is different from other weight loss options in that it resets the hypothalamus gland so that you go forward with a better metabolism to avoid gaining the weight back. It also reshapes the body by tapping into the abnormal fat such as saddlebags and pear-shaped areas without making the face and chest thin. It takes care of the skin as weight reduction occurs. It does not require exercise and takes care of hunger. The HCG weight loss cure also promotes an overall feeling of well-being.
If you are interested in learning more about the HCG Weight Loss Cure, please call Absolute Family Health (located at 6555 Stage Road, Suite 1, Bartlett) at # 901-791-4101 and register for their monthly HCG class that is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 pm. You must pre-pay the HCG Weight Loss Cure Guide fee of $25.00 to hold your spot which covers the cost of you attending the class and the brochures which will be reviewed during the class, so you can learn how you can lose up to 34 lbs. in 40 days and conquer your Absolute Health.

Meet some very special friends of our Regel PharmaLab family:
Here is their story:
We want to introduce you all to our two sweet boys Colin (age 6) and Jesse (age 3). They both happen to have an often terminal illness called Mitochondrial Disease. Mito can affect people in many different ways. In our boys’ cases, it affects their muscles, gastrointestinal tracts, lungs, brains, eyes, ears, and nervous system. They have autonomic instability which causes them to have bad heat intolerance. Their stomachs have failed and intestines are not far behind. Our youngest has had to have a permanent IV placed for nutrition at this point. It is very difficult for us to watch them struggle on a daily basis, but we are blessed that they are as happy and care free as they are despite all of these major health issues.
Our family has had and is still experiencing many struggles. Our kids have been the biggest blessings in our lives and continue to amaze us with how smart and happy-go-lucky they are. It took us years to find a diagnosis for the many medical issues that our boys face. After 4 and 1/2 years of searching, we ended on the diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease with Complex 1 deficiency. Their bodies are slowly giving up on them, and we are doing everything in our power to keep them as healthy and happy as possible. Both boys are J-tube fed with enteral formula 23 hours a day, G-tube vented 23 hours a day, and Jesse has a central line IV for TPN to be administered 12 hours a day. They also require medications to be formulated by Regel Pharmalab to be pushed through the J-tube. Our boys are single hand-idly the two most awesome kids a parent could hope for. Unfortunately, due to the 6 years of medical intervention, we have reached our financial brink and will be forced to file bankruptcy unless we can get the financial help we so desperately need.
The photo below shows just one day worth of supplies that we go through in order to keep our boys alive and nourished. Their medication schedule is 1am, 6am, 9am, 1pm, 3pm, 6pm, 8pm, and 10pm. In this time frame they get 6 to 8 different medications, most of which are taken 2 to 3 times a day. They use a cough assist machine 2 to 3 times a day because their lungs are not strong enough to clear the typical buildup of mucus that coats the lungs. We have to prep their enteral formula daily with blenders so that they are able to get 23 hour drips into their intestines to keep them nourished. Jesse is also on TPN (also prepped daily) through a central line (permanent IV in the chest) and gets 80% of his nutrition through his heart. Their weak immune systems cause us to often be home bound, and we have to continually Lysol and sanitize much of the house in order to protect them. When we do go out they never leave without their masks and a hefty amount of hand sanitizer, not to mention all of their pumps and supplies. We have a few days a week where we have nurses helping us, but for the most part, it is just Mom and Dad.
Each week brings 2 to 3 days a week of driving to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital for therapy or doctors’ appointments. The boys have weak muscles, and use adaptive medical strollers when we are not in our house. Colin is now in a power wheelchair and we still need to find a way to buy a ramp that can load and unload the over 200 pound chair. Due to Mitochondrial Disease we have had to get a much larger vehicle than we originally had for our family, so that we could get them from point A to point B with all of their medically necessary equipment. This has brought on another much unexpected bill that just piles on top of all the medical debt we have accumulated.
Many of the things most families take for granted, our family struggles with multiple times on a daily basis. For example, eating food for breakfast, lunch, or dinner is nearly impossible for us. The food smells cause the boys to get very nauseated and drastically slows their gut motility making it near impossible for them to tolerate their J-tube feeds. As a result, Sarah and I have to eat in our garage (100+ degrees in the Memphis summer can really take its toll on you quickly, as can 20 degrees in the winter.) We have our garage set up with a kitchen table, microwave, toaster oven, and blender. By eating in the garage we have had to give up on the typical idea of cooking, and often have to resort to using our microwave and toaster oven to cook or resort to fast food. This can get expensive quickly, and greatly limits our options as far as our diet is concerned. That being said, we will do whatever it takes to keep the boys bodies as healthy as possible.

I have been wanting to share with you the opportunities we have had working with patients that suffer from Migraines. I thought it might be best for you to hear it from a patient. Check out her story.
Migraines have been a part of my life since I was a teenager. It was inevitable that I would, most likely, inherit them since my mom and both grandmothers had them. It didn’t annoy me so much until I had a partial hysterectomy two and a half years ago. My migraines became chronic daily nightmares and my energy level was at an all time low.
Shortly thereafter, the Lord opened the door for me to come to work for Regel Pharmalab. After struggling with prescription and over the counter medications, I found that these migraines could be prevented with a few nutrients that I was possibly a little low on. I also discovered that balancing my hormones would help. Josh Regel, Pharm.D. made recommendations for me and I started taking two main supplements that I depend on that make a difference for me in preventing my migraines:
Dr. Regel has also compounded a nasal spray and a topical pain cream that I have used at the beginning of a migraine. These two formulations have kept me, at many times, from having to take standard migraine medications that often have side effects.
I was able to balance my hormones by completing a saliva test and Anita Hester, Regel Pharmalab’s staff Registered Nurse and bio-identical specialist, made a recommendation to my gynecologist to have some natural hormones compounded for me. I knew nothing about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. I had only heard about the dangers of the synthetics and did not want to go there. While becoming educated to perform my marketing duties, I started learning the details behind the bio-identicals and how supplements play a huge part in enhancing the effects of the natural solution. Anita also referred me to a number of other supplements that she determined I was needing. I noticed an immediate increase in my energy level, and today I feel like a completely different person. I believe that this, in combination with the Magnesium and Riboflavin, is what has made the difference for me. I am happy now to be able to help other ladies through all I have learned.

Is it just that time of year for dry itchy skin or do you suffer from dry itchy skin year round? Chronic dry itchy skin issues may be a sign of something you may not be aware of. Here are a couple things that are not often considered.
1. Low Thyroid or low functioning thyroid – When someone wants to discuss their dry itchy skin, the first question I usually ask is “are you taking a thyroid medication?” A low thyroid hormone can decrease the blood flow to the arms and legs and to the surface of the skin. The elongation of dietary fatty acids into oils preferred by the skin to maintain moisture requires optimal function of thyroid hormone. I guess this is another advantage for taking Fish Oils (Omega 3’s). For more on Fish oils and dry itchy skin go to www.omega-research.com.
One issue that I will try to cover in a future post is that of low functioning thyroid. This is when the level of thyroid in the blood is normal but you have many, if not all the symptoms of low thyroid. So often I hear patients discuss their symptoms and when I ask if they have had their thyroid checked they answer “yea, my doctor says it’s not my thyroid”.
So next time you have your blood drawn, ask your doctor or nurse if you could have a full thyroid panel. Whether or not you have thyroid problems, it would be nice to see how the thyroid is functioning. I would like to see a Total T4, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TSH, Thyroglobulin, and TPO. If you are not planning on seeing the doctor anytime soon and would like to have your thyroid checked, let me know and I can send you one of our test kits. For more information on the test kits go to www.zrtlab.com.
2. Low Vitamin D
Vitamin D is one of my favorite vitamins to recommend. I find that most of us are deficient even though you can get it from the sun’s exposure to your skin. Isn’t that an incredible feature that God has given us? It is these little things that make me wonder how someone can believe we came from a ball of goo. But that is another story I’ll leave for the discussion section.
Being able to make a necessary nutrient just by getting some sunshine is one of the reasons I find this vitamin so interesting. Several colleagues have discussed with time lately that
. So to get back into focus, how does Vitamin D affect dry or itchy skin? Here is what I have learned.
Evidence shows lower vitamin D levels are found in patients that suffer from dry itchy skin. There is extensive research that has shown a relationship between Vitamin D and Eczema. Eczema is a chronic dry itchy skin condition. Apparently Vitamin D helps in suppressing the inflammation process that causes dry itchy skin. For more information on vitamin D, I always head over to www.vitamindcouncil.org.
What you can do, is have your Vitamin D level checked. A normal range for Vitamin D is between 30 and 80. I am always hoping to see a level above 50 but below 100. The research shows that this will provide maximum benefit. Since this is not on the standard blood test, you will have to request this test the next time you are at your doctor’s office. We also have a kit that can test for vitamin D if you are not going to your doctor anytime soon.
If you have any questions on these ideas to help your dry itchy skin just leave me a comment below or send me a message email@example.com
Have you ever noticed an ad for a medicine that uses the phrase #1 recommended by Physicians/Pharmacists/Dentist etc.? or 4 out of 5 dentist recommend … Have you ever wondered if the information on the ad was true? As a pharmacist, there are many items that I recommend almost daily that have never been on any of these lists. As a matter of fact, I don’t know if I have ever recommended any of the products that are advertised as #1 recommended by pharmacists.
One of the most common recommendations I make is for the treatment of acne. I make recommendations for standard acne for the teenager, hormonal acne for the adult thirty something, and acne rosacea for the over 40 crowd. No matter what category you are in, I have five recommendations for you to consider making part of your routine.
